Oh wow, I don’t even know when to start with our amazing and beautiful glass roof…
First as a houseman, periodically we would have to go and wash that huge piece of glass so our guests could enjoy beautiful view of the sky while in the lobby. Oh boy it was definitely a love hate relationship. First we had to gear up… helmets, anti slip boots, harness with rope attached to it… second had to connect to the water supply… which by the way was like the worst ever… Water pressure would go up and down… so annoying and of course couldn’t get help from engineering. There would be always two people cleaning the roof, usually me and one of the other housemen. We would pour “Ludwik” (very popular and amazing dishwashing detergent) on the glass mop and flush with water from the hose. It usually took us the entire 8h shift to clean it and make it shine. First steps on the glass roof were scary, and despite knowing that the glass below is strong and multilayered you can’t resist the feeling of “what if it shatters?”. After few times the fear was gone and the work was fun, well maybe not when it was cold and windy or snowing… oh yes we would have to remove snow from it as well… We had some good time there while working, one of the best housekeeping related songs we sang there… sometimes we would come up with some amazing jokes… like…
“What would finance director say if the glass would break and houseman would fell on his table below while he’s having lunch? … and who is going to pay for this…” or “What room attendant would say to the houseman that is falling from the roof into lobby?… since you’re on your way down can you bring me extra pillow to 452 please!” or another one; “What would security manager say to a houseman that fell down to the lobby? … you were cleaning what? I didn’t even know you were up there…”
We had some good time up there looking at the amazing city of Krakow, looking at people in the lobby 5 stories below having coffee, lunch or breakfast and just enjoying their daily routines. We were the ones the make literally they day brighter after job well done. What a good memory…
